Red Horn Bull Study

Description

Dave McGary has cast two distinctive figures from his seminal work, “Last Stand Hill”, one of which is “Red Horn Bull”. The Oglala Sioux leader who, alongside Kicking Bear, lead numerous charges against Major Reno’s U.S. Cavalry forces in the Battle of Little Big Horn. According to stories, it was Red Horn Bull who captured the flag that he holds in this depiction. The flag was considered an important victory trophy by the tribes until the Cavalry later recaptured it at the Battle of Slim Buttes. In this scene, Red Horn Bull carries the flag and his brightly painted war shield in his left hand, while in his right hand he holds a circa 1870’s Winchester rifle.
