Dave McGary was selected to replicate the esteemed Shoshone leader, Chief Washake. The monument was dedicated at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on September 7, 2000. The "Chief Washakie" monument joins that of women's suffrage leader Esther Hobart Morris, the second Wyoming figure of historical significance displayed in the U.S. Capitol.
